Local Attorney Offers ‘College Transition Package’

Legal Documents that Help Safeguard Young Adults in Medical Emergencies

FAIRFIELD, CT, June 11, 2019 -- Fairfield Attorney Mark Schnitzler is pleased to announce the addition of a new product to his suite of legal services:  a comprehensive ‘College Transition Package’ created to help parents and young adults navigate the transition to college.

This set of legal documents puts the proper framework in place to enable parents of college students to assist them in making medical decisions in case of an emergency or illness.  “Most parents do not realize the implications of the fact that their 18-year-old son or daughter is considered an adult in the eyes of the law,” Attorney Mark Schnitzler said. “This means that if their child is taken to an emergency room, doctors or other medical personnel are legally prohibited from discussing their condition or taking direction from the parents. Those restrictions apply even if parents are fully supporting that child or if they remain covered under the family health insurance.”

Parents can preserve those rights by having their children execute documents before they leave for college.  Schnitzler Law, LLC, will customize the documents to conform with the formalities mandated by the State of Connecticut.  The documents are also designed to comply with the formalities required by any other state where your college student or young adult will reside.

“No parent wants to dwell on the idea that their child could become ill or be injured,” Schnitzler added. “But unfortunate incidents do happen. And it is not only life-or-death circumstances. Sometimes, a young adult has an underlying medical condition or significant history that must be taken into consideration when delivering emergency care.  This legal package helps close the information loop.”

According to a study from the National Institutes of Health, hospitalization for drug and alcohol overdoses among 18- to 24-year olds increased dramatically over the past two decades.   Chronic illness among young people is also on the rise; one source estimates as many as 1 in 4 children now live with chronic conditions such as diabetes or asthma.  Executing the ‘College Transition Package’ documents prior to an emergency event gives families peace of mind by allowing parents to legally make life-saving decisions on behalf of their adult children.
